Here, on the site of the Kirishitan Yashiki, a dig in 2014 found the bones of people who had been buried.
DNA analysis identified one of them as a European.
And he was judged to be the Italian missionary Giovanni Battista Sidotti.
The story begins on the island of Yakushima in 1708, the fifth year of Hoei.
On the twenty-eighth day of the eighth month, fishermen out at sea off the village of Yudomari saw a large, unfamiliar ship lying on the water.
The next day, the twenty-ninth, a record of the questioning says, a stranger wearing a sword appeared before a farmer who was cutting wood, and beckoned to him.
The Shimazu family chronicle writes of that day: "On the island, suddenly, one man was seen."
The record of his questioning in Nagasaki calls him "a man of Rome, in the country of Italia."
It writes that he asked for nothing, and spoke only of urging people to take up his religion.
The same record also says he had been on Yakushima since around the sixth month, which does not match the day the ship was seen.
Arai Hakuseki wrote that he set down the gist of his questions and answers in two volumes and presented them.
Hakuseki recorded all this in the three books of the Seiyo Kibun.
The first tells how it all began and ended, the second what the man told of the countries overseas, and the third the gist of his answers.
According to the records, he was buried here, in the Kirishitan Yashiki.
