江戸城で、オランダ人たちは将軍に拝謁しました。
そのとき何をさせられたか、本人が書き残しています。
書いたのは、出島の医師ケンペルです。
At Edo Castle, the Dutch were received in audience by the Shogun.
One of them wrote down what they were made to do there.
He was Kaempfer, the physician at Dejima.
In het kasteel van Edo kregen de Hollanders audiëntie bij de shogun.
Wat hun daar te doen werd gegeven, heeft een van hen zelf opgeschreven.
De schrijver was Kaempfer, arts op Dejima.
謁見の間に入ると、左に六人の参議官が座っていました。
右の廊下には、近侍の宮臣が二三人。
その右に当たる簾の中に、二人の婦人の座所と、将軍の座所がありました。
一行と向かい合って、最上席の参議官、牧野備後守が一人で座りました。
備後守が、将軍に代わって挨拶をします。
そこからが、こうです。
「面を上げて直坐せよ」。「マンテルを脱げよ」。
姓名と年齢を名乗らされました。
そして、「立てよ」「彼方此方に行けよ」「身を廻はせ向き直れ」「舞へ踊れ」。
ケンペルには、特に歌を唄うようにと命じられました。
立て、あちこち歩け、回れ、舞え、踊れ。そして、歌え。
外交の儀礼ではあります。
ただ、書いている本人の側から見ると、こういう場でした。
As you entered the audience hall, six councillors sat on the left.
In the corridor on the right stood two or three attendant courtiers.
To the right of them, behind a lattice screen, were the seats of two women and the seat of the Shogun.
Facing the party, the senior councillor Makino Bingo-no-kami sat alone.
He gave the greeting on the Shogun's behalf.
And then this.
"Lift your face and sit up straight." "Take off your cloak."
They were made to give their names and their ages.
And then: "Stand." "Walk this way and that." "Turn yourself around." "Dance."
Kaempfer in particular was ordered to sing.
Stand, walk about, turn, dance. And sing.
It was a diplomatic ceremony, of course.
But from where the man writing it stood, this is what it was.
Bij het binnenkomen van de audiëntiezaal zaten links zes raadsheren.
Op de gang rechts stonden twee of drie hofdienaren.
Rechts van hen, achter een rieten scherm, waren de plaatsen van twee vrouwen en de plaats van de shogun.
Tegenover het gezelschap zat, alleen, de eerste raadsheer Makino Bingo-no-kami.
Hij sprak de groet uit namens de shogun.
En dan dit.
"Hef het hoofd op en zit recht." "Trek de mantel uit."
Zij moesten naam en leeftijd opgeven.
En vervolgens: "Sta op." "Loop heen en weer." "Draai u om." "Dans."
Kaempfer kreeg daarbij in het bijzonder het bevel te zingen.
Sta op, loop heen en weer, draai rond, dans. En zing.
Het was een diplomatiek ceremonieel.
Maar gezien vanuit degene die het opschreef, was dit de plek.
