A large ship carrying foreigners arrived here on the island of Tanegashima.
The people on board had guns with them.
The lord of the island, Tanegashima Tokitaka, bought those guns and had more made on the island.
As pessoas a bordo traziam espingardas.
On the Japanese side there is a record called the Teppouki, the Record of the Gun. It was written in 1606, the eleventh year of Keichou.
It says the large ship came in at the little bay of Nishimura in the eighth month of the twelfth year of Tenbun, 1543.
The record calls the people on board "southwestern foreign merchants."
Tokitaka watched them fire the guns, said nothing of the high price, and bought two.
He kept them as treasures of his house.
He had the island's smiths copy their shape, but they could not work out how to close the bottom of the barrel.
The next year foreign merchants came again, and among them was a smith.
Tokitaka had his smith learn from him how to close the barrel, and within a little over a year they made several dozen new guns.
There are records on the Portuguese side too.
They say three Portuguese were on a ship bound for China, were driven off course by a storm, and reached Tanegashima.
The year differs from record to record. The Portuguese record of António Galvão gives 1542.
Researchers write that after the gun arrived, warfare in the Warring States period changed greatly.
