スペインのセビリアの近くに、コリア・デル・リオという町があります。
そこには、「ハポン」、スペイン語で「日本」という意味の姓を名乗る人たちが住んでいます。
その姓がどこから来たのかには、説が二つあります。

People live there who bear the surname "Japón," which means "Japan" in Spanish.
There are two accounts of where that surname came from.

名古屋大学の研究の報告によると、1993年7月の時点で、ハポン姓を名乗る人は832人いました。
父方の姓がハポンの人が322人、母方が500人、父母ともハポンという人も10人いました。
教会の洗礼名にハポンの姓が最初に見られるのは、1660年代から70年代だ、と同じ報告は書いています。
一つ目の説は、こうです。
支倉常長を団長とする使節の一行のうち、日本に帰らずに残った人たちの子孫だ、と伝えられています。
もう一つの説は、こうです。
使節が着くより前に、日本人と交易して「ハポン」とあだ名された男がいた。
その一人、バルトロメ・ロドリゲス・ハポンに遡る、と伝えられています。
名古屋大学の研究は、ハポン姓の101人のDNAを調べました。
けれども、日本人に由来する痕跡は見つかりませんでした。
日本という名の姓が、いまもこの町に残っています。
According to a report from a Nagoya University study, as of July 1993 there were 832 people bearing the surname Japón.
For 322 of them it was their father's surname, for 500 their mother's, and for 10 it was both.
The same report writes that the surname Japón first appears in church baptismal names in the 1660s and 70s.
The first account goes like this.
They are said to be descendants of members of the mission led by Hasekura Tsunenaga who stayed behind instead of returning to Japan.
The other account goes like this.
Before the mission arrived, a man traded with the Japanese and was nicknamed "Japón."
The surname is said to go back to that one man, Bartolomé Rodríguez Japón.
The Nagoya University study examined the DNA of 101 people named Japón.
But it found no trace that came from the Japanese.
A surname that means Japan still lives on in this town.

En 322 de ellas era el apellido del padre, en 500 el de la madre, y en 10 ambos.

La primera explicación es esta.

He believes the surname can be traced back to just one man - Bartolomé Rodríguez Japón, who was given the nickname Japón after travelling to America and trading with the Japanese, several years before the arrival of the samurai in Coria del Río.
He discovered that the first person baptised with this surname was Catalina Japón, a woman from the town born in the mid-17th century.

その結果、日本人に由来すると考えられるY‑STRハプロタイプは観察されず、また、ゲノムワイドなSNP解析からも日本人に由来すると考えられる結果が得られなかった。
