In the year 752, the eyes of this Great Buddha were painted in.
The year before, the rank of Soujou was given to a monk written of as a Brahmin who had come from the south.
His name was Bodhi.
The official chronicle of Japan, the Shoku Nihongi, records that day.
"Summer, fourth month, day of the wood rooster. The great image of Vairocana was completed. The eyes were opened for the first time."
The emperor came to Toudaiji and, with the whole civil and military court, held a great assembly.
The ceremony was ranked equal to New Year's Day. Officials of the fifth rank and above wore court robes.
Ten thousand monks were invited.
The music office and the temples brought their musicians, and all their music came together.
The dances — gosechi, kume-mai, tatefushi, touka, houko — sounded from the east and from the west, and were performed with the courtyard divided between them.
The chronicler closes with this:
"Since the Buddha's law came east, there has never been an assembly of such splendour."
Those are the words of the chronicle itself.
And yet the chronicle **does not say who officiated at the eye-opening.**
Read the entry to its end, and no name appears.
The name appears in a book compiled 570 years later.
The chronicle does record the man himself, though.
In the winter of 736, in the tenth month —
seasonal robes were given to the Tang monk Dousen and to "the Brahmin monk Bodhi."
And in 751, the year before the eye-opening:
"By imperial decree, the monk Bodhi was made Soujou."
The same decree, the chronicle notes, made the monk Rouben a Shousouzu.
The year before this Great Buddha was finished, that rank was held by a monk written of as a Brahmin who had come from the south.

South Indian faces & traces in eighth-century Japan: Bodhisena (Univ. of Edinburgh)
On this occasion, the Great Buddha’s pupils were painted in, thereby enlivening the statue and transforming it into a religious icon. According to temple records, the one who carried out this action was a brahmin monk from South India named Bodhisena.
