A ship carrying six Japanese, Otokichi among them, once came as far as the waters off Uraga here.
But it was fired on from Uraga, and fired on again when it went round to Satsuma, and it turned back.
Otokichi never got home, and later, in China, he helped Japanese castaways who had drifted there.
This was written down by Japanese castaways who drifted to China in the Kaei era.
The account that twelve of them gave to officials after they got home still survives.
It names the Japanese who were already in China: "the three men of Owari, Otokichi, Kyukichi and Iwakichi."
And it records what the three told them.
Six men were to be sent home to Japan on "an English ship," and it came as far as the waters off Uraga.
But it was fired on with cannon from Uraga, and again when it went round to Satsuma, and could not get near, they said.
Otokichi took the twelve to his own house and argued in many ways for them to be sent home, the account says.
But the foreigners would not listen, it says.
Otokichi later lived in Singapore and died without ever returning to Japan, according to the town of Mihama and others.
It is also said that he became a British subject and served as an interpreter in talks between Japan and Britain.
