そのうち、あなたの国のものは、ほとんどできあがっていました。
文久二年（1862年）、それは一晩で焼けました。
On this hill, legations for five nations were being built.
Of the five, your country's was nearly finished.
In 1862, the second year of Bunkyuu, it burned in a single night.
『武江年表』という江戸の年代記が、そのまま書き留めています。
「品川御殿山へ異國人の旅館を建」。
異国人のための建物が、この丘に建てられた、と。
同じ年の項に、こうあります。
「浪士集りて夜中炮を放つて燒却せり」。
浪士たちが夜に集まり、火を放って焼いた。
そして、この一行が続きます。
「五ヶ國の内英吉利の分大方に營作成しを、一時の烟とはなしぬ」。
五か国のうち、英国のぶんはほとんど出来上がっていた。それが煙になった、と。
同じ年の項には、高輪の東禅寺の異国人の宿舎にも、浪士が乱入した、とあります。
暴行があった、と書いています。
An Edo chronicle called Bukō Nenpyō sets it down plainly.
"At Shinagawa Gotenyama, lodgings for foreigners were built."
Buildings for foreigners went up on this hill.
Under the same year comes this:
"Rōnin gathered, and in the night set fire to it and burned it."
The rōnin met in the night, set fire to it, and burned it.
And then this line:
"Of the five nations, the English portion was largely finished — and it became smoke of the moment."
Of the five, the British building was nearly complete. It went up in smoke.
Under the same year, it also records rōnin breaking into the foreigners' lodgings at Tōzen-ji in Takanawa.
There was violence there, it says.
