In 1871 a secretary of the British Legation translated the story of the forty-seven samurai and published it.
That book put the story into English.
His name was Mitford, Second Secretary to the British Legation in Japan.
彼は、この寺に来ています。
本堂の左手の堂に、金色の観音像の下、四十七人と主君の像が並んでいました。
木彫りで、顔には色が付き、装束は漆で仕上げてある、と書いています。
そのあと、こう書きました。
「銀の鍵が、遺品の非公開の閲覧を許した」。
友人と二人、寺の奥の部屋に通されました。
その遺品の中に、革の当てを鉄の片で綴じた、手製の鎖帷子がありました。
人目を忍んで支度をした証拠だ、と彼は書いています。
He came to this temple himself.
In a chapel on the left of the main court, beneath a gilt figure of Kannon, stood the images of the forty-seven and of their lord.
Carved in wood, the faces coloured, the robes richly lacquered.
Then he wrote this:
"A silver key once admitted me to a private inspection of the relics."
He and a friend were shown into a back room of the temple.
Among the relics was home-made chain armour, wads of leather secured together with pieces of iron.
Evidence, he wrote, of the secrecy in which the rōnin had made their preparations.
