万延元年（1860年）、この東禅寺には、イギリスの仮の公使館が置かれていました。
その年の正月七日、総領事オールコックに通訳として雇われていた日本人、伝吉が殺されます。
伝吉は紀州熊野の船頭で、アメリカに漂流し、そこで英語を身につけた人でした。
In the first year of Man'en (1860), the British provisional legation was housed here, at Tozenji Temple.
On the seventh day of the first month of that year, Denkichi, a Japanese man employed as an interpreter by Consul General Alcock, was killed.
Denkichi had been a ship's master from Kumano in Kishu; he had drifted to America, and learned English there.
オールコックは、自分の本の中でこの通訳をダンキルヒと呼び、その身の上を書いています。
難船して長く国を追われ、アメリカと中国で過ごしたのち、西洋との国交が再び開かれたことで、ようやく国に帰ることができた、と。
東禅寺の寺の日記『天寿室日記』の安政六年（1859年）六月の条にも、伝吉の名が見えます。
オールコックの本では、1月29日、日曜の午後のことです。
オールコックのもとへ、通訳が深手を負って運び込まれました。
通訳は公使館の門まで下りてきて、街道に近い広場に面した門のそば、旗竿の真下で、路地の家の入り口にもたれていました。
まわりには男も女も子どももいる、白昼のことです。
そこへ、路地の後ろから一人か二人の者が忍び寄り、短刀で刺しました。
オールコックは幕府に抗議し、伝吉の葬儀には、幕府から外国奉行が二人参列しています。
ちょうど一年後、オールコックは、ある人を葬った場面を書いています。
その墓地は、一年前に通訳が公使館の門で殺されたとき、自分が選んだのと同じ場所だった、と。
In his book, Alcock calls this interpreter Dankirche, and tells his story.
He had escaped shipwreck and had long been an exile from his own country; after years in America and China, he was able to come home only because relations with the Western Powers were renewed.
The temple's own diary, the Tenjushitsu Nikki, also records Denkichi's name, in its entry for the sixth month of the sixth year of Ansei (1859).
In Alcock's book, it was a Sunday afternoon, January 29.
The interpreter was carried in to Alcock, badly wounded.
He had gone down to the gate of the Legation, which opened onto a wide space close to the high road, and was leaning against a doorway at the end of a lane, right under the flagstaff.
Men, women and children were about; it was broad daylight.
One or two men crept down the lane behind him and stabbed him with a short sword.
Alcock protested to the shogunate, and two commissioners for foreign affairs attended Denkichi's funeral on the shogunate's behalf.
Exactly one year later, Alcock wrote about a burial.
The burial place, he wrote, was the same one he had chosen a year before, when his interpreter was slain at the gate of the Legation.
