万延元年（1860年）、ポルトガルの使節の船が品川の沖に来て、その一行は、この高輪の東禅寺に泊まりました。
『武江年表』という記録は、こう書いています。
「同二十五日、ホルトガルの使船始て着し、高輪東禪寺に宿す」
In the first year of Man'en (1860), the ship of a Portuguese envoy came into the waters off Shinagawa, and his party stayed here, at Tozenji Temple in Takanawa.
A Japanese chronicle, the Buko Nenpyo, records it like this:
"On the twenty-fifth, the Portuguese envoy ship arrived for the first time, and lodged at Tozenji in Takanawa."
使節の名はギマレース。
和親通商条約を結ぶため、軍艦に乗って来たのです。
『維新史料綱要』は、その軍艦が品川の沖に来たのを、五月二十四日としています。
老中の脇坂安宅と安藤信睦は、信睦の屋敷で使節と会い、国書を差し出すことと、条約を結ぶことについて話し合いました。
使節との会見は、この東禅寺に置かれていたイギリスの仮の公使館でも開かれ、条約の条文が審議されています。
外国奉行の溝口直清らは、再び使節と会って審議を終え、調印と、国書を差し出す日取りを相談しました。
そして六月十七日、外国奉行らは使節と、修好通商条約二十四か条と、貿易の決まり九か条を結んで、調印します。
使節は、十九日に去りました。
The envoy's name was Guimaraes.
He had come aboard a warship to conclude a treaty of amity and commerce.
The Ishin Shiryo Koyo gives the day the warship came into the waters off Shinagawa as the twenty-fourth day of the fifth month.
Two senior councillors of the shogunate, Wakisaka Yasuori and Ando Nobuyuki, met the envoy at Nobuyuki's residence and discussed the presentation of his state letter and the conclusion of the treaty.
Meetings with the envoy were also held at the British provisional legation, which was then housed in this temple, and the articles of the treaty were examined there.
Mizoguchi Naokiyo, a commissioner for foreign affairs, and others met the envoy again, finished examining the articles, and discussed the dates for the signing and for the presentation of the state letter.
Then, on the seventeenth day of the sixth month, the commissioners for foreign affairs and others signed with the envoy a Treaty of Amity and Commerce of twenty-four articles, together with trade regulations of nine articles.
The envoy left on the nineteenth.
