安政六年（1859年）六月七日、イギリスの人たち三十人余りが、この東禅寺に移ってきました。
この寺の日記『天寿室日記』が、その前後の日々を書き留めています。
On the seventh day of the sixth month of the sixth year of Ansei (1859), some thirty British people moved into this temple, Tozenji.
The temple's own diary, the Tenjushitsu Nikki, recorded the days around their arrival.
日記を紹介した高橋正彦の論文によれば、日記はこう書いています。
四日。イギリスの人を泊めるため、寺の檀家が警固に当たり、仙台と備前の家から詰めの侍が寺に来ました。
五日。松平伊豆守から、寺に知らせが届きます。イギリスの使節が、あす六日にこの寺へ移ると外国奉行が言っているので、心得ておくように、と。
六日。大風で、陸へ上がるのが難しく、イギリスの人たちは移ってきませんでした。
七日。「英人三十人余リ移来」。
日記は、泊まったイギリスの人たちの名と年も書き留めていて、ミニストル（公使）のエールコックを「六十才」と書いています。
のちに、イギリスのミニストルの書院から、火が出たことがあります。
日記によれば、火は天井に移って少し焼け、寺の小遣いの者が「火事々々」と呼んで、寺は鐘を撞き鳴らしました。
周りの寺からは見舞いの僧が来て、隣の寺々も、こちらの鐘を合図に鐘を撞いた、と日記は書いています。
オールコックの本にも、火事の話があります。
十一月もだいぶ過ぎたころ、夕食の少し前に、召使いが食堂のストーブに大きな火を焚き、垂木に火が移った、と。
寺の大鐘の最初の一打ちで、地区の長も助けに来て、近くの大きな池の水と、小さな消火ポンプ二台で、火は消し止められました。
損なわれたのは瓦と屋根と天井だけだった、とオールコックは書いています。
According to a paper by Takahashi Masahiko that introduces the diary, it reads like this.
On the fourth: to house the British, the temple's parishioner families took charge of guarding it, and men stationed by the houses of Sendai and Bizen came to the temple.
On the fifth: a notice reached the temple from Matsudaira Izu-no-kami. The commissioners for foreign affairs said that the British envoy would move into the temple the next day, the sixth, and the temple was to be prepared.
On the sixth: a strong wind made landing difficult, and the British did not come.
On the seventh: "Some thirty-odd Englishmen moved in."
The diary also noted the names and ages of the British who stayed, and gives "Ērukokku," the "Minisutoru" (Minister), as sixty years old.
Later, a fire broke out in the study of the British Minister.
According to the diary, the fire spread to the ceiling and burned it a little; the temple servant shouted "Fire! Fire!", and the temple rang its bell.
Monks came from the surrounding temples to ask after them, and the diary says the neighbouring temples also rang their bells at the signal of this temple's bell.
Alcock's book also tells of a fire.
Well into November, a few minutes before dinner, a servant had lit a monstrous fire in the dining-room stove, and the rafters caught fire.
At the first clang of the great Temple bell, the mayor of the district came to help, and with water from a large pond close at hand and a couple of little fire engines, the fire was put out.
Only the tiles, roof, and ceilings were damaged, Alcock writes.
