In 1614, Christianity was banned in Japan.
After that, Takayama Ukon and Naito Joan petitioned the shogunate to be allowed to leave the country.
The place Ukon's party crossed to was Manila.
The party included Ukon's wife Justa, a daughter, and five grandchildren.
The voyage to Manila was a hazardous one.
A Japanese translation of a church history, the Nihon Seikyoshi, tells of that voyage like this.
The ship lost its fair wind and drifted for a whole month; its hull leaked, and four missionaries died, it says.
The same book also tells of the welcome in Manila.
The Governor of the Philippines decorated the road down to the harbour and waited; when the ship came in, salutes were fired, and the townspeople gathered on the shore, it says.
Ukon died of illness in 1615, less than two months after arriving in Manila.
The Nihon Seikyoshi tells that his funeral was held with the rites of a prince, and that officials quarrelled over the honour of carrying the coffin.
It also tells that people pressed toward the coffin to kiss Ukon's feet, so guards were posted to stop them.
And that the church was hung with sacred sayings in four languages: Latin, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.

After a hazardous journey to Manila
he died from illness less than two months after his arrival
Following Tokugawa Ieaysu’s 1614 prohibition on practicing the Christian faith in Japan, Takayama Ukon and Naitō Tadatoshi (also known as Naitō Joan 内藤如安), a veteran of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea who in 1593 had been made the envoy to Beijing by Konishi Yukinaga, sent a petition to the bakufu requesting to leave the country.
In the 1570s, he became the lord of Takatsuki 高槻 castle, in today’s Osaka Prefecture.
Together with Jesuit padres and members of mendicant orders, they boarded three Spanish vessels under the command of Captain Estéban de Acosta in Nagasaki.
