この出島にあったオランダ商館の長に、長崎奉行が一通の命令書を出しています。
シーボルトが日本の地図を頼んで送らせた、その経緯を書いたものです。
地図を渡した日本人のほうは、牢で死にました。
To the head of the Dutch trading post here on Dejima, the magistrate of Nagasaki sent an order.
It set out how Siebold had asked for maps of Japan and had them sent to him.
The Japanese official who handed over the maps died in prison.
Aan het hoofd van de Nederlandse factorij hier op Deshima stuurde de magistraat van Nagasaki een bevel.
Daarin stond hoe Siebold om kaarten van Japan had gevraagd en ze naar zich had laten sturen.
De Japanse ambtenaar die de kaarten had overhandigd, stierf in de gevangenis.
渡したのは、高橋作左衛門という幕府の天文方の役人でした。
命令書は、こう書いています。
シーボルトが江戸へ来たとき、高橋と度々会い、日本地図と蝦夷図その他を頼んだ。
高橋がそれを送った、と。
申渡、罰の言い渡しは、九月二十五日、立山の御役所で、両長崎奉行の立ち合いのもとに読み上げられました。
和文の日付は「文政十二年丑九月」。同じ文書の蘭訳には「一八二九年十月」とあります。
贈られた品の中に禁制の品があったこと、通詞、通訳に告げずに受け取ったこと、そして国法に背いたこと。
そのうえで、こう結びます。
「依之貰請候品取上げ、以來國禁申付候」。
品を取り上げ、以後の入国を禁じる。
日本側の処分は、これより重いものでした。
高橋作左衛門、四十四歳。下河辺林右衛門、五十一歳。二人とも召し捕られました。
そして事件の日次、日付の順を並べた表に、一行だけこうあります。
「高橋作左衞門牢死」。
The man who handed them over was Takahashi Sakuzaemon, an astronomer in the shogun's service.
The order puts it like this.
When Siebold came up to Edo, he met Takahashi repeatedly and asked him for the map of Japan, the map of Ezo, and other things.
Takahashi sent them.
The sentence was read out on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, at the Tateyama office, before both governors of Nagasaki.
The Japanese text is dated the ninth month of Bunsei 12; the Dutch translation of the same document says October 1829.
Among the gifts were forbidden items; he took them without telling the interpreters; and he had gone against the law of the country.
It ends like this:
"The goods received are confiscated, and he is henceforth barred from the country."
Confiscation, and exclusion from the country.
What happened on the Japanese side was heavier.
Takahashi Sakuzaemon, forty-four. Shimokōbe Rin'emon, fifty-one. Both were arrested.
And in the table of dates for the case, there is one line:
"Takahashi Sakuzaemon died in prison."
Degene die ze overhandigde, was Takahashi Sakuzaemon, een astronoom in dienst van de shogun.
Het bevel zegt het zo.
Toen Siebold naar Edo kwam, ontmoette hij Takahashi herhaaldelijk en vroeg hem om de kaart van Japan, de kaart van Ezo en andere dingen.
Takahashi stuurde ze.
Het vonnis werd voorgelezen op de vijfentwintigste dag van de negende maand, in het kantoor in Tateyama, in aanwezigheid van beide gouverneurs van Nagasaki.
De Japanse tekst is gedateerd de negende maand van Bunsei 12; de Nederlandse vertaling van hetzelfde document zegt oktober 1829.
Onder de geschenken waren verboden voorwerpen; hij nam ze aan zonder de tolken in te lichten; en hij was tegen de wet van het land ingegaan.
Het eindigt zo:
„De ontvangen goederen worden in beslag genomen, en hem wordt voortaan de toegang tot het land ontzegd.”
Inbeslagname, en uitsluiting uit het land.
Wat er aan Japanse kant gebeurde, was zwaarder.
Takahashi Sakuzaemon, vierenveertig. Shimokōbe Rin'emon, eenenvijftig. Beiden werden gearresteerd.
En in de tabel met de data van de zaak staat één regel:
„Takahashi Sakuzaemon stierf in de gevangenis.”
