A Bible in Japanese was carved onto woodblocks and printed in this city, in 1837.
The men who helped translate it were three shipwrecked Japanese.
One of them, Otokichi, is said never to have gone home.
A ship loaded with rice, salt and pottery left Onoura in Owari, and was blown out into the Pacific by a storm. The year is said to have been 1832.
Three of them reached land alive. The crew is said to have numbered fourteen.
One of them was Otokichi, said to have been fourteen years old.
The three washed ashore in North America, were sent on to England, and from there to Macao.
There they were put to work helping a missionary named Gützlaff.
The work was to translate the Gospel of John into Japanese.
It took less than a year, from the end of 1835 to November of the following year.
In 1837 the text was carved onto woodblocks and printed.
The original still survives, in the library of Meiji Gakuin University.
On the third leaf of the book, the place of printing is printed into the page:
"Singapore — printing blocks held by Kenka Shoin."
Singapore is this city, and Kenka Shoin was the house that kept the woodblocks.
The text is written entirely in katakana.
It opens like this.
"Hajimari ni, kashikoi mono gozaru."
In the beginning, there was a wise one.
For the Word of God, the three men had only the speech of their own village to reach for.
In time, a ship carried them toward Japan. The Japanese record says six men were aboard.
It was fired on at Uraga, sailed south to Satsuma, was fired on again, and turned back.
Otokichi never went home.
Years later, twelve Japanese castaways washed up in China.
Otokichi took all twelve into his own house and negotiated for their return.
This is known because those twelve, once home, told it to the officials, and the record was kept.
He is said to have died in this city.

A Japanese junk was wrecked last winter in the vicinity of Cape Flattery and out of the crew of fourteen men only three were saved and redeemed from the Indians by Captain McNeill on his voyage this Summer to Fort Langley.
by these men going to Great Britain they would have an opportunity of being instructed and convey to their countrymen a respectable idea of the grandeur and power of the British nation
