生き残った三人は、北アメリカの岬の近くで、先住民から身請けされました。
三人をイギリスへ送ると決めた人の手紙が、残っています。

手紙を書いたのは、マクラフリンです。日付は、1834年11月18日です。
去年の冬、日本の船がフラッタリー岬の近くで難破した、と書いています。
乗組員十四人のうち、助かったのは三人だけだった。
三人は、マクニール船長が、フォート・ラングレーへの航海の途中で、先住民から身請けした、と。
マクラフリンは、この三人をイギリスへ送ることにしました。
イギリスへ行けば教えを受け、イギリスの国の大きさと力を、国の人たちに伝えられるだろう、と書いています。
日本の側の伝えでは、船は宝順丸といい、天保三年（1832年）に、この小野浦を出たとされます。
三人の中にいた音吉は、そのとき十四歳だった、と伝えられています。
The letter was written by John McLoughlin, and it is dated 18 November 1834.
Last winter, he wrote, a Japanese junk was wrecked near Cape Flattery.
Out of a crew of fourteen, only three were saved.
They were redeemed from the local people by Captain McNeill, on his voyage to Fort Langley, he wrote.
McLoughlin decided to send the three to Great Britain.
There, he wrote, they could be instructed, and carry back to their countrymen a respectable idea of the grandeur and power of the British nation.
According to Japanese accounts, the ship was called the Hojunmaru and left Onoura here in 1832, the third year of Tenpo.
Otokichi, one of the three, is said to have been fourteen at the time.

1832（天保3）年、1500石船宝順丸が尾州小野浦（現、愛知県知多郡美浜町）から、米や塩、陶器を積んで江戸に向かって出港。乗組員14名の中に14歳の音吉も乗っていた。不運にも遠州灘で嵐にあい太平洋を漂流し、1年2カ月に渡る船上での苦闘の末、生き残った音吉、久吉、岩吉の3名は米国ワシントン州、ケープアラバへ漂着した。
