By the fish market at Nihonbashi there was a district called Anjin-chō.
Anjin was the name of an Englishman.
William Adams. His house stood here.
Adams served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was given an estate at Nihonbashi.
A study of the period puts it this way: he was able to live "exactly as a hatamoto or gokenin."
That is, he could live just like one of the shogun's own retainers.
A book from the Taisho era says the district was named for the place where his residence stood.
After he died, the townspeople of Anjin-chō sent eight to of rice to the temple every year, and kept up his memorial.
Not for a year or two.
In the tenth year of Kansei (1798), more than a hundred and seventy years after his death, they dedicated two stone lanterns before the mound (tsuka) raised for him.
A district that had been given his name did not forget him.
A letter of his own survives too, dated the twenty-second of October, 1611, written to his countrymen.
