イギリス公使館の医師マイバーグが真夜中に向かいましたが、着いたときには、もう亡くなっていました。
葬列の前に、幕府から警告が届きます。墓まで送れば、命を落とすだろう、と。
オールコックは書いています。「No one hesitated」。誰一人、ためらわなかった、と。
ヒュースケンが葬られた場所は、一年前にイギリス公使館の日本人通訳が殺されたとき、オールコック自身が選んだ場所と同じでした。
新しい墓のかたわらには、その通訳の平らな碑がありました。
公使たちは帽子を取り、一人ずつ、ひとつかみの土を墓に投げ入れました。
葬列の翌日、外国の公使たちはイギリス公使館に集まり、身の安全とそれぞれの君主の名誉のために、何をすべきかを話し合いました。
Heusken had come to Japan as interpreter and secretary for the United States.
One night he was waylaid and badly wounded.
The American Minister, Townsend Harris, sent to the British Legation for a surgeon.
The British Legation's doctor, Myburgh, set out at midnight, but when he arrived the patient was already dead.

Heusken was buried in the same place that Alcock himself had chosen a year before, when the British Legation's Japanese linguist was killed.
Beside the newly closed grave stood that linguist's plain tablet.
With heads uncovered, the Ministers each cast a handful of earth into the grave.
The day after the funeral, the foreign Ministers met at the British Legation to decide what must be done for their own safety and the honour of their sovereigns.

葬式はどういふ關係からであるか、善福寺では執行せられず、さほどには遠からぬ廣尾の光林寺で營まれ、その亡骸はその裏手の岡に登る墓地に埋葬せられた

ヒュースケンは後に米國の公使館が九段下から麻布善福寺の境内に移されてから、一夜芝赤羽橋外異人接遇所から馬でかへる道すがら、薪河岸で日本の刺客數人に襲はれ重傷を負ひ、善福寺境内の公使館に入ると間もなく息を引取つた

ヒュースケンは、アメリカの通訳兼書記として安政3年(1856)7月下田に到着し、さらに江戸に入り、総領事ハリスの片腕となって、困難な日米間の折衝に活躍し、日米修好通商条約締結にも尽力します。ヒュースケンは、その快活な性格と日本語に通じていたことによって、江戸の人々にも知られていました／BORN At AMSTERDAM/ January 20, 1832.
その葬列は、幕府の外国奉行・5か国の弔旗・アメリカの国旗で被われたヒュースケンの柩・各国の公使領事ら・プロシアの軍楽隊・護衛の海兵隊などからなり／光林寺の墓地では、まずジラール神父によりローマ・カトリックの儀式が行われ、その後日本の僧侶による供養がなされました
12月5日午後9時頃、善福寺へ帰る途中、一団の浪士に襲撃され、刀で腹部を深く切られて落馬
