Here at Kōrinji temple lies a secretary of the American Legation. His name was Heusken.
Before his funeral, a warning reached the American Minister.
If you follow the body to the grave, it said, you are likely to lose your own lives.
ヒュースケンはアムステルダムに生まれ、アメリカの通訳兼書記として日本へ来た人です。
ある夜、待ち伏せされ、深い傷を負って亡くなりました。
四日後、各国の外交団と神奈川の領事たちが、アメリカ公使館に集まります。
そこへ幕府から、アメリカ公使に警告が届いたのです。
イギリス公使オールコックは、そのときのことを、こう書いています。
「No one hesitated」。誰一人、ためらわなかった、と。
葬列には兵が一人も出されず、川沿いに一マイル以上続く道には、襲撃への備えがまったくありませんでした。
棺は、アメリカの国旗で覆われていました。ヒュースケンはオランダの生まれですが、合衆国に仕える人だったからです。
公使たちは帽子を取り、一人ずつ、ひとつかみの土を墓に投げ入れました。
ヒュースケンの墓は、この寺にあり、港区の史跡に指定されています。
Heusken was born in Amsterdam and came to Japan as interpreter and secretary for the United States.
One night he was waylaid and mortally wounded.
Four days later, the diplomatic corps and the consuls from Kanagawa gathered at the American Legation.
That was when the warning from the shogunate reached the American Minister.
The British Minister, Rutherford Alcock, wrote of that moment:
"No one hesitated."
Not a soldier was called out, and along more than a mile of road beside a river there was no precaution at all against an attack.
The coffin was covered with the American flag; though Dutch by birth, Heusken was a servant of the United States.
With heads uncovered, the Ministers each cast a handful of earth into the grave.
Heusken's grave is at this temple, and is designated a historic site of Minato Ward.

ヒュースケンは後に米國の公使館が九段下から麻布善福寺の境内に移されてから、一夜芝赤羽橋外異人接遇所から馬でかへる道すがら、薪河岸で日本の刺客數人に襲はれ重傷を負ひ、善福寺境内の公使館に入ると間もなく息を引取つた

ヒュースケンは、アメリカの通訳兼書記として安政3年(1856)7月下田に到着し、さらに江戸に入り、総領事ハリスの片腕となって、困難な日米間の折衝に活躍し、日米修好通商条約締結にも尽力します。ヒュースケンは、その快活な性格と日本語に通じていたことによって、江戸の人々にも知られていました／BORN At AMSTERDAM/ January 20, 1832.
その葬列は、幕府の外国奉行・5か国の弔旗・アメリカの国旗で被われたヒュースケンの柩・各国の公使領事ら・プロシアの軍楽隊・護衛の海兵隊などからなり／光林寺の墓地では、まずジラール神父によりローマ・カトリックの儀式が行われ、その後日本の僧侶による供養がなされました
12月5日午後9時頃、善福寺へ帰る途中、一団の浪士に襲撃され、刀で腹部を深く切られて落馬
