「No one hesitated」。

Heusken was born in Amsterdam and came to Japan as interpreter and secretary for the United States.
One night he was waylaid and mortally wounded.
Before the funeral four days later, a warning came from the shogunate: follow the body to the grave, and you are likely to lose your lives.
The British Minister, Rutherford Alcock, wrote: "No one hesitated."
The coffin was covered with the American flag.
Alcock gives the reason: though Dutch by birth, he was a servant of the United States.
The flags were lowered, and with heads uncovered the Ministers each cast a handful of earth into the grave.
Heusken's grave is at this temple, and is designated a historic site of Minato Ward.
De Britse gezant Rutherford Alcock schreef: "No one hesitated" – niemand aarzelde.

He had been waylaid on his return from the Prussian Legation by a band of assassins, and mortally wounded.
I received a brief note from Mr. Harris asking me to send surgical aid to Mr. Heuskin, who had been brought in wounded. At midnight Dr. Myburgh, a medical officer attached to the British Legation in the capacity of Dutch Interpreter, went off immediately, but soon returned with information that his patient was dead.
the American Minister received a warning from the Government, that if they persevered in their intention of following the body to the grave, they were likely to lose their own lives
No one hesitated
not a soldier called out — but there was a total absence of any precautions to prevent a surprise or sudden attack along the line of road, which lay for more than a mile by the banks of a river ; and offered great facilities of attack from cross-roads leading to it, and bridges which traversed it at short intervals.
A greeting had come to the assembled Ministers of the Five Powers, when met together at the American Legation, to follow the last victim of this Machiavellian policy
On the fourth day after, all the Corps Diplomatique and the Consular body from Kanagawa assembled by invitation at the American Legation to render the last honours to the murdered man/met, by common consent, the next day at the British Legation to consider their position, and what course it behoved them to take, not merely for their own safety; but for the honour and dignity of their respective Sovereigns
The Capital of the Tycoon, Vol. II(New York: Harper, 1863)
As the funereal cortege wound its way from the American Legation to the burial-place … It was the middle of January, but the sun shined brightly, and not a fleck or a cloud was in the sky to dim its lustre.
In the centre of the group is a Roman Catholic priest in his white robes, and on a terrace above the heads of all stand five Japanese dignitaries, Governors of Foreign Affairs, whose attendance is any thing but voluntary on their part. These, dressed in their Haka-ma of ceremony, look coldly down upon the scene at their feet.
The flags of four Treaty Powers are there, to which those of Prussia, not yet in the number, is joined, and to the right the Representatives of those Powers are all present, surrounded by a strong guard of Prussian marines, no ship of war of any other nation being at the anchorage.
The place of interment was the same I had selected just one year before, when my linguist was slain at the gate of the Legation.
The bier is covered by the American flag, for, though Dutch by birth, the murdered official was a servant of the United States
as the service proceeded, notes of sadness filled the air from the band of the Prussian frigate — a wail of sorrow and complaint.
The flags are lowered, while with uncovered heads the Ministers each cast in a handful of earth.
though Dutch by birth, the murdered official was a servant of the United States … A foreigner in his prime, the only son of a widowed mother
By the side of the newly-closed grave was a plain tablet, distinguished from all the rest by its Roman characters, 'Dankirche, Japanese linguist to the British Legation, murdered by Japanese assassins on January 21, 1860 ;' and this was January 18, 1861, when another Legation had furnished its annual victim
