この増上寺の本院に、かつてアメリカ人の教師がいました。
雇われて、この寺に置かれていたのです。
それを書いているのは、役所どうしが土地をめぐって交わした書類です。
In the main quarters of this temple, Zoujouji, there were once American teachers.
They had been hired, and they were placed here, in this temple.
We know it from papers two government offices exchanged over a piece of land.
明治五年（1872年）の五月十二日。記録の日付は「壬申五月拾貳日」です。
開拓使という役所が、東京府に掛け合いを出しました。
それによると、開拓使はこの寺の本院を買い取っていました。
そこに役所の出張所と、仮の学校を置いています。
そして、こう続けます。
「御雇教師米人等差置候義ニ付、構內手狹」。
雇った教師の米人らを置いているので、構内が狭い、と。
開拓使は、まわりの土地を払い下げてほしいと願い出ました。
門前の松と桜の植溜が三か所、あわせて千九十七坪。
そして出張所の構内が、七千六百三十四坪あまり。
絵図面も添えています。
東京府の答えは、否でした。
寺の境内の扱いは、この寺だけでなく、寺院全体のことである。
この山内のことは、正院で詮議、話し合っている筋もある。
東京府は厳しく取り締まるよう、あらためて達しを受けている。
それに、こちらにも見込みがある。
だから、いまは引き渡せない。
東京府は、海軍省と陸軍省にも書き送っています。
これまで何度も打ち合わせてきたこの山内のことは、すべて取り消す。
ただし、院や寮の家屋を、双方の話し合いで買い入れるのは、差し支えない。
記録が教師について書いているのは、ここまでです。
名前も、人数も、何を教えたかも、書かれていません。
The twelfth day of the fifth month of the fifth year of Meiji (1872). The record dates it "Jinshin, fifth month, twelfth day."
A government office called the Kaitakushi sent a request to the Tokyo prefecture.
According to it, the Kaitakushi had bought the main quarters of this temple.
There it had set up a branch office and a temporary school.
And the request goes on.
It speaks of the teachers it had hired as "beijin-ra", that is, "Americans etc."
Because it had placed them here, the grounds were cramped.
The Kaitakushi asked to be sold the land around it.
Three plots of pine and cherry nursery in front of the gate, 1,097 tsubo in all.
And the grounds of the branch office, a little over 7,634 tsubo.
A map was attached.
The Tokyo prefecture said no.
How temple grounds were handled concerned every temple, not this one alone.
On these temple grounds, the Council of State had matters under deliberation.
The prefecture had just been told, once again, to keep strict control.
And it had plans of its own.
So for now, it could hand nothing over.
The prefecture also wrote to the Navy Ministry and the Army Ministry.
All the arrangements made so far about these temple grounds were cancelled.
Buying the sub-temples' buildings by private agreement, however, was not objected to.
That is all the record says about the teachers.
It gives no names, no number, and does not say what they taught.

芝增上寺本院買取、當使出張所假學校等取設候處
御雇教師米人等差置候義ニ付、構內手狹早々差支候間
門前ニ松櫻植溜地所三ケ所合坪千九拾七坪、並出張所構內地坪七千六百三拾四坪九合五勺五才御拂下地相願度、則別紙繪圖面相添及御掛合也。
壬申五月拾貳日
右は同寺而已ならず、各寺院境內一般處分候處、同山內之儀は正院ニ於て御詮議之筋も有之候付、當府ニ於て嚴重取締可致旨、今般更に御達相成
殊ニ見込之筋も有之、旁差向之處御引渡等之儀は取計兼申候、此段可然御承知置被下度、御囘答申進候也。
先般中屢々御打合有之候內、同山內云々ハ渾テ取消シ候條左樣可被成候
尤相對以テ院寮家屋御買入被成候義ハ强テ差閊無之候間、其時々御通達有之候樣イタシ度
明治五年壬申正月日枝神社ノ西ニ渡船貳ヲ置キ
