お客様がいま立っているこの上野の山で、明治のはじめ、陸軍省が、徳川家の歴代の墓地の南の広場を求めました。
相応の代金で買い上げるので、差し支えがあるかどうかと、値段を申し出よ、というのです。
徳川家の答えは、代金は受け取らない、というものでした。
Here on this hill of Ueno, where you are standing, in the early Meiji years, the Army Ministry asked for the open ground south of the Tokugawa family's graves.
It would pay a fair price, it said, and asked the family to say whether there was any objection, and what the price would be.
The Tokugawa family's answer was that they would take no money.
陸軍省の達しを受けて、徳川家達は、壬申の年の十月に答えています。
絵図面に朱で引いた場所は、差し支えありません。
ただ、この土地は、まったく墓所のために下された土地です。
ですから、御用になるのなら、「代價拜受不仕」、代金は受け取らず、そのまま差し上げたい、と。
陸軍省は、その書面に朱で書き込みました。
書面の趣は聞き届けた。
明十九日の十一時に、受け取りのため役人を差し向ける。徳川家の家令か家扶、家の事務を預かる者が立ち会って、引き渡すように、と。
翌月の十一月、徳川家の家令の溝口勝如が、朱書のとおりに引き渡した、と届け出ています。
願いで終わらず、土地は実際に引き渡されたのです。
In reply to the Army Ministry, Tokugawa Iesato answered in the tenth month of the year of Mizunoe-Saru.
The place marked in red on the map, he wrote, presents no difficulty.
However, this land was granted solely for the family graves.
So, if it is to be put to official use, "we will not accept payment," and we wish simply to give it up as it is.
The Army Ministry wrote its reply in red ink on that very letter.
Your letter is received and granted.
Tomorrow, the nineteenth, at eleven o'clock, officials of this Ministry will come to receive it. A steward of your house is to be present and hand it over.
In the eleventh month, the Tokugawa family's steward, Mizoguchi, reported that the land had been handed over as the red note ordered.
It did not end as a request. The land really changed hands.
