This museum in Ueno, where you are standing, was first meant to be built on the site of the Central Hall of Kan'eiji temple.
In the first month of 1876, the ninth year of Meiji, that land was handed over as the site for building the museum.
But the planned site was then moved to where the head priest's residence of Kan'eiji had stood.
In the first month of 1876, the Home Ministry handed the land of the former Central Hall over to the museum.
It measured some 18,774 tsubo, and it was given as the site for building the museum.
But on the thirteenth day of the first month of 1877, the tenth year of Meiji, the Tokyo prefecture announced that the Central Hall site would become part of the park.
In its place, the museum was given the land where the head priest's residence had stood, some 29,807 tsubo.
The Tokyo National Museum, in its own history, dates this change to the twelfth month of 1876.
How the two dates relate is not stated, either in the prefecture's notice or in that part of the museum's history.
As for the site of the head priest's residence, the Tokyo City History records a description of the old sites of Ueno Park.
It says the residence was burned in the fighting in the fifth month of 1868.
Its site, it goes on, "is now the exhibition ground."
The museum writes about the First National Industrial Exhibition.
The centre of its grounds, it says, was a brick art gallery built on the site of the head priest's residence.
That gallery was later used as it was, as an annex to the main building designed by Conder.
Conder's main building was begun in the third month of 1878 and completed in the first month of the fourteenth year of Meiji.
It stood in almost the same place as today's main building, the museum's history says.
On the twentieth day of the third month of 1882, the museum's opening ceremony was held in the presence of the Emperor Meiji.
The Tokyo City History also quotes a Chinese-style poem of the time.
Passing along the road by Kan'eiji, it says, the place for choosing Buddhas had become a place for displaying things.
