On this hill of Ueno, where you are standing, there was once a Great Buddha Hall.
On the night of the fighting on the hill, many halls burned, but the Great Buddha Hall was left standing.
Yet in 1876, the ninth year of Meiji, a newspaper reported that the hall would soon be pulled down.
The Zoku Buko Nenpyo describes the night of the fighting at Ueno.
Many halls, including the Main Hall and the head priest's residence, burned down in a short time.
Among them, it says, the Kiyomizu Hall, the time bell, the Great Buddha Hall and others were left standing.
In the second month of 1869, the Great Buddha Hall, with the Kiyomizu Hall and others, was handed over once again to Ryouun-in, a temple on the hill.
At that time, the temple was told that people could come to worship as before.
But on the twenty-eighth day of the eighth month of 1876, the Yubin Hochi newspaper reported this.
The Great Buddha Hall on the west side of Ueno Park would soon be pulled down.
The bronze Buddha would be left under the open sky, a Buddha wet with the rain.
The paper reported a plan; this article does not say when the hall was actually taken down.
The Tokyo City History, in a note on an old photograph held by Kan'eiji, says the hall was removed in the ninth year.
Today Kan'eiji writes that the Great Buddha of Ueno was first built in 1631.
It also says the head fell in the Great Kanto Earthquake, the body was taken for metal during the Second World War, and only the face remained.
